Ryshon Jones – Letter to Jhene Aiko

February 4, 2012 in The Leak

“Damn, I should feel ashamed/ I’m in love with a girl and I don’t know how to pronounce her name.”

This one line alone perhaps sums up the nature of this newest leak from Ryshon Jones, “Letter to Jhene Aiko” – somewhat aimed to flatter, but completely and unapologetically honest. Over a Lee Bannon-produced beat that doesn’t sound too far from an instrumental Miss sailing soul(s) herself might have used on a track, Jones waxes thirst poetic over how Jhene’s voice and image makes him think of a former lover.

No telling whether or not this appears on a future project of Jones’, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t worth listening to (if for no other reason than that many people SHOULD relate to being attracted to Aiko). I mean, it’s slightly romantic, isn’t it? An aural love letter to a fellow artist, as opposed to, say, a pornstar. I’m thereby filing “Letter to Jhene Aiko” under the category of justifiable thirst.

Stalley – God’s Child

February 3, 2012 in The Leak

With each passing week, Stalley’s Savage Journey To The American Dream comes closer to fruition. After the past seven days brought forth three separate releases from Massolin’s favorite bearded hero, he anoints himself “God’s Child” with the blessing of Block Beattaz with drums and piano stabs being ushered right along with the MMG signee into the spotlight. Shouting out Texas, Cali & ‘Bama car culture, Stalley rides around with a halo on his head and the message of the Blue Collar Gang in his heart.

Ryshon Jones – Fighting With My Conscious x Nightmare in Philly

February 2, 2012 in The Leak

Remember how, in the movie Inception, if you intruded too far into your thoughts, your subconscious would start attacking you? Well, up-and-comer with arguably one of the smoothest flows I’ve heard in years, Ryshon Jones, seemed to adapt that concept to wax on his newest leak, “Fighting With My Conscious.” Jones’ own words about the track’s development -

This song was inspired by a talk I had with the producer of the song. I heard the beat and I was contemplating on what to say on it, and I ended up being too self-conscious of what i should say and ended up making a song about wishing I lost the ability to not think at all.

Part of the reason I enjoy listening to Jones is because of the pure honesty he brings on every track, and “Fighting With My Conscious” is no exception. Over a beat from Rolan Millz, Ryshon tackles self-doubt, frustrations with a woman in his life, and that sometimes looming dark matter within the grey matter that makes want to literally kill their thoughts when they start thinking too hard. It’s a haunting track, but a testament, again, to Ryshon Jones’ consistently growing potential.

As a bonus, we’ve also provided for you after the jump a leak Ryshon dropped over the weekend, “Nightmare in Philly.” Yeah, we take care of y’all (no Rihanna and Drake).

Artwork: Big K.R.I.T. – 4EvaNADay x “Boobie Miles”

February 1, 2012 in Artwork, The Leak

First and foremost, Happy Big K.R.I.T. Release Month, everyone! I mean, umm, Happy Black History Month, everyone!

Perhaps in celebration of the occasion – but more than likely, to continue to build hype for his major label debut album 4EvaNADay as he’s preparing for its release later this month – K.R.I.T. took to twitter to make two big announcements. First, he released the official album cover art for 4EvaNADay, which you can check out above.

Secondly, this:

i need a few more days 2 finish my single “I got this” BUT here’s art 4EvaNaDay http://t.co/Ijqkl3dd N im bout 2 drop a special song 2day
@BIGKRIT
Big K.R.I.T.

upon which K.R.I.T. not only hinted towards the name of the album’s upcoming single – “I Got This” – but also promised a special leak for his patiently waiting fans. Which brings us to “Boobie Miles.” Big K.R.I.T. will automatically get points for this with the Texas and Friday Night Lights fans just because of the song’s namesake. But “Boobie Miles” also has K.R.I.T dropping some motivational bars over some of his smoothest instrumentation ever – word to that horn and piano putting in work – somehow making his voice keep time with the thudding bass in the background.

Big K.R.I.T.’s 4EvaNADay is due out in these streets February 20th.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensamble Covers OutKast’s “SpottieOttieDopaliscious”

February 1, 2012 in The Leak

For the past three years, we’ve waxed more poetic about OutKast than any other non-Houston entity. It’s sacrilege not to mention the hot debate between ATLiens & Aquemini and how near-Teflon Dre & Big Boi’s catalog is. It’s also worth nothing that “SpottieOttieDopaliscious” is not only one of the greatest songs ever made with a few horns and snares, it’s one of the best ‘Kast songs ever.

So imagine my eyes when The Hypnotic Brass Ensamble, a 9-piece band out of Chicago with 88% percent of its members sharing some ties to jazz great Phil Cohran covers this OutKast ditty. They’ll be in Los Angeles on February 23rd but hopefully they tour across the country, and hit Houston one of these days.

Don Trip – Allen Iverson

January 31, 2012 in The Leak

I’ve actually heard “one hit wonder” thrown around a tad in terms of Don Trip, and I’m not too happy about it. True, he’s been riding the “Letter to My Son” wave for a good while, but that’s to no fault of his own because Don was spitting raw on that track and it’s still one of the most honest ones I’ve heard in the last two years. I’m anxious to see Don prove these people wrong. And as the countdown continues to Help Is On The Way’s arrival, we’ve been treated to another leak from Mr. Trip named after a basketball icon.

The only thing better than a good sample, perhaps, is a well-sampled interview. With producers Cool & Dre on the boards providing a hard-hitting beat, Don Trip merges select interview clips from AI himself – including that infamous one about practice – with some bars to craft a track that’s, at the least, worth some rotation on your iTunes. It’s possible this track will actually not be on Help is On The Way but rather an alleged other project Don’s cooking up until the album drops, Guerrilla. Either way, keep your eyes open for both SOON.

MaLLy – Future’s Classic (f. Tigre)

January 31, 2012 in The Leak

The sun’s shining bright in Minnesota these days. The T-Wolves are quickly becoming America’s Team in the NBA thanks to a fun team with Ricky Rubio, Kevin Love and more, Rhymesayers is still pumping out great hip-hop and artists like MaLLy can easily slide to the forefront of the scene with brute honesty and devout lyricism.

A Prefix premiere, “Future’s Classic” combines heavy horns and drums circa Prince & The Revolution with straight laced, uncut bravado rap from MaLLy not easily moved by competitors and detractors. It’s jogging ready fist pump rap from the Twin Cities and one of those precursor freebies that lead to something far more important and meaningful down the line.

Onehunnidt – Talkin’ Dine [Remix] (f. KAB Tha Don & Frank-Lee)

January 31, 2012 in The Leak

When motivated by a bully, Onehunnidt moves like the bullies move, aggressive and unflinching. The remix to “Takin’ Dine” features KAB Tha Don hulking his way through a verse & Frank-Lee making certain that his name is felt even if he has to follow a monster. One’s Keep It 100 is coming soon.

Zavey – Way With Words

January 30, 2012 in The Leak

Rather effortlessly, Zavey steps out of being a rapper for the latest leak off of his DJ Burn One & DJ Mr. Rogers hosted tape Up Yonder. StuntNDozier tosses some slinky piano keys and MPC drums together as Zavey shows out with a hearty arsenal of punchlines.
