Esperanza Spalding – Black Gold

February 2, 2012 in Singles

Jazz music found its revival in the pop culture landscape in 2011 when Esperanza Spalding shocked everyone by nabbing the coveted Best New Artist award at the Grammys. After pushing slight boundaries with her previous two releases Chamber Music Society and her self titled effort, Spalding is putting forth a more commercial effort entitled Radio Music Society combining her world renowned jazz aesthetics with a more upbeat, pop template.

The first single, an uplifting feature with Algebra Blessett entitled “Black Gold” flutters with neat horns and percussion. Blessett’s voice is easy, tailored for the contemporary funk laid down by Spalding and crew, possibly finding a home on urban radio markets and more.

Tunk – No Defeat (f. Paris Pershun of A.Dd+)

January 29, 2012 in EPs, Singles

Dallas’ own Tunk flanks A.Dd+ in the same way Cool Breeze stayed around the Dungeon Family for all those years, a supporting character more than capable of stepping into the spotlight and snatching stardom for himself. His entire No Defeat EP comes on the heels of a resurrection for Dallas hip-hop, a percussion heavy concoction steered by Breeze the Beat Machine where synths and drums are king and authenticity in the face of struggle is the call to fame.

The EP’s title track features the poet side of A.Dd+ in Paris Pershun swipes a key portion of Kanye West’s “All Falls Down” over a mixture of high trumpets and snare drums. Tunk has the idea of perspective rap down pat from the mentions of car notes, poverty and the stresses wrapped in between to some sort of growing aesthetic. The new age of being broke while constantly being in the land of riches weighs heavily from South Dallas to New York City, where Tunk knows especially that his voice need be heard.

Stream “No Defeat” below & pick up the EP via Tunk’s Bandcamp page.

Yuna – Live Your Life (prod. Pharrell)

January 27, 2012 in Singles

A FADER Label premiere, Yuna’s “Live Your Life” produced by Pharrell is bubbly, completed with the producers trademark percussion & subtlely powerful. Grooving, trilling quotes like “we’re something bigger than this” makes the track a star gazing winner.

John Legend – Tonight (Best You Ever Had) (f. Ludacris)

January 26, 2012 in Singles

Slated to appear on the soundtrack to Steve Harvey’s Think Like A Man movie, John Legend gets a bit raunchy on “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” but thanks to plodding production that consists of guitar strings & chimes fels like Legend’s trying to be more than straight laced for the hell of it and not actually enjoy it. Ludacris delivers his usual R&B feature template of a verse and then we’re left wondering – remember when a collab between these two seemed like money on paper?

BJ The Chicago Kid – His Pain (f. Kendrick Lamar)

January 18, 2012 in Singles

An undeniable crooner, classifying BJ The Chicago Kid as underrated is impetuous. Rash but correct. Known mostly for his contributions to works by Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Gibbs & others, BJ sets forth with his own debut P I N E A P P L E N O W – L A T E R S on February 14th and a stirring K. Dot feature should help steer eyes in his direction.

The Sounwave produced “His Pain” was on the advanced copy of Section.80 but somehow didn’t make the retail version. It’s fine, because the smoothness of BJ’s vocals combined with the rawness of Kendrick’s vocals paint one absolutely stirring vision. Pieced together mostly by Sounwave’s piano keys, light horns and guitar strings, Kendrick spits a notable sixteen almost to the point of near tears and BJ comes and plays clean up, absolving him of his sins or adding to them by being an open vessel to cry into.

ScHoolboy Q – Grooveline Pt. 1 (f. Dom Kennedy & Curren$y)

January 13, 2012 in Singles

Q’s Habits & Contradictions arrives on your e-doorstep sometime later tonight but until then the TDE product puts forth one of the smoother Lex Luger creations if not ever. “Grooveline Pt. 1″ takes the playerific lines from Q, Dom & Spitta, tosses in some 70s style smoked out funk to it and plays to the crowd. An early favorite from H&C but a scan of the tracklist sees A$AP Rocky, Ab-Soul, Jhené Aiko & Jay Rock all decide on what’s best for them – the habits or the contradictions. Stream “Grooveline Pt. 1″ below.

Yo Gotti – Go Girl (f. Big K.R.I.T., Wiz Khalifa & Big Sean)

January 9, 2012 in Singles

Tomorrow, I’ll have to eat some form of crow because Yo Gotti’s oft-delayed album Live From The Kitchen is finally seeing the light of day. Thus, one of the last singles is shocking not aimed at the purveyors of the pyrex but the ladies. “Go Girl” sees YG flanked by Wiz & Big Sean but no K.R.I.T. verse in sight, just the chorus. Still, a pretty neat radio ready single from the King of the Memphis.

Robert Glasper Experiment – Move Love (f. KING)

January 5, 2012 in Singles

The upbeat piano keys along with sauntering drum licks provide a smooth landscape for both Robert Glasper & budding R&B songstresses KING. Clocking in at a shade over three minutes (most of it being a Glasper piano solo and harmonies from the KING sisters), “Move Love” is a easy listening piece from Black Radio. The RGE album, slated to be released in February has already gained steam online thanks to the leak of the Erykah Badu assisted “Afro Blue”.

The-Dream – ROC (Roc Your Body)

January 5, 2012 in Singles

Still head over heels from The-Dream’s throughly enjoying 1977? He figured as much so as a treat, the rejuvenated hit songwriter creates “ROC”, a multi-layered romp that takes the best of Nash’s songwriting and his penchant for being the new aged R. Kelly and combines the two. “When I make love to you girl/Feel like I’m on top of the world,” he states in the song’s chorus, half the time equating love making to the net worth in his bank account. When he makes claims like he received $15 million for penning “Umbrella”, he can make those statements, can’t he?

Robert Glasper Experiment – Afro Blue (f. Erykah Badu)

January 4, 2012 in Singles

Jazz music isn’t snobby, it’s one of the more appreciative art forms in music. The balance of songs, the way horns collide with pianos and trumpets, it’s almost erotic really. The Robert Glasper Experiment, champions of jazz and one of the few “household name” jazz bands around (aside from Esperanza Spalding’s troupe) are putting forth an LP effort entitled Black Radio and an early standout from it comes from the Erykah Badu assisted “Afro Blue”. A refreshing sight to see Badu on some jazzy instrumentation, the pianist and the singer cover a Mongo Santamaria piece that’s more commonly linked to John Coltrane.

Black Radio is set to be released on February 28th with features from Lalah Hathaway, Musiq Soulchild, Lupe Fiasco, Bilal, Mos Def, Ledisi, Meshell Ndegeocello & more including a cover of Nirvana’s “Smell Like Teen Spirit”
