Not surprisingly, Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards were filled with tributes and nods to many of the lives music has lost this year. Recently departed disco queen Donna Summer was honored, but an obvious highlight of the night was a fitting tribute to the late Whitney Houston.

While it’s a pretty damn interesting coincidence and will no doubt start up “who was better” debate that both award show homages to Whitney thus far in 2012 have involved former American Idol winners (Jennifer Hudson sang “I Will Always Love You” at the Grammys earlier this year), John Legend’s rendition of “The Greatest Love of All” was not only eclipsed by the violins backing him, but especially by Jordin Sparks’ soulful remake of the timeless “I Will Always Love You” (and she was looking pretty damn good while doing so, I might add). And when Bobbi Kristina and Pat Houston come onstage to accept the Millennium Award for Whitney, it gets about as real as it did all those years ago when Prince and Paris Jackson spoke about their father Michael.

The entire run for M.i’s The Coldplay Sessions has been a lush, flowing move. Much like the tape itself, the Austin native has carefully thoughtout everything and in the AaronIsNotCool directed clip for “NoThing”, all the fluff has been truncated in favor of direct shots of the Austin producer/emcee, obligatory images which rest right within the narrative and plays more like early morning inspiration set for a Nike commercial. 2 Chainz, afficinado for infectious production and designer love sure does have a soft spot for Kreayshawn. While the world thought the weirdest trap-rap to the bay collaboration resided between Gucci Mane & Kreay’s co-hort in pissing off more than a few people V-Nasty, it’s actually these two who wind up sharing bloody meals for his “Murder” video and some wacky pancakes with a dash of two cups for her new single “Breakfast”.

Of course, we’re still attempting to figure out what does exactly Kreayshawn bring to the table seeing that her “Gucci Gucci” blow up of a year ago fizzled out right when nudes of her caught the internet’s attention. “Breakfast” makes for quirky raps, some forciable struggle from Kreay Kreay and 2 Chainz quote-unquoting Lil Wayne while wanting to fornicate in Southern California. Strong 2 Chainz, plus toliet tissue soft Kreayshawn equates to thoughts of wanting this to be strictly 2 Chainz. Rolling Stone says Something About Kreay will be a “fun” record. The rest of the world seems to think otherwise.

Soulo complements his wide open imagery on the haunting “Terrorist Threats” with graffiti, burning money, Kitty Pryde’s favorite rapper and various images all displaying some form of corruption and disconnect in his eyes. He even makes the cute as a button Jhené Aiko stand in a TDE hoodie looking as if she’d give you a buck fifty if you said something that didn’t agree with counter culture. After starting off the week with the release of her new theme song for all AKA probates happening this fall Cashin’ Out remake “Ivy’d Out,” Miss Mykie hit us this Thursday with her newest leak from her forthcoming #NoReceipt project, the remix for “For My City.”

Some of you may remember the original “For My City,” a standout from Mykie’s That Pink, That Green Vol. 2 album that featured the singer going in over the instrumental to the classic Houston anthem “June 27th.” While the same verses from the original make their way onto the remix – including the still relevant line, “I am so major, without a major deal/ and if I had a major deal/ they would hate me still” - but the remix benefits from two new additions: the song’s beat has been slowed down, allowing for Mykie’s lines to stand out with more clarity; and a guest verse from Killa Kyleon, who, at one point, lays down a set of lines related to colors that concludes by offering up a very different version of “pink and green” that’s both comical and clever.

Miss Mykie’s #NoReceipt mixtape, presented by Kiki J and mixed by DJ Young Samm, is due out later this summer.

Somehow, Nas has the same genes that inhabit Pharrell Williams and a host of others. They don’t age, ever. Nas is closer to 40 but looks 19 when he stands next to Nicki Minaj as her love interest for the “Right By My Side” video directed by Benny Boom and if the initial shock hasn’t worn off yet, the video itself will leave you even more confused.

Six weeks into it’s run on the shelf, Pink Friday 2: Roman Reloaded hasn’t even cracked the gold plateau yet with this being the closest thing to a urban pop smash on there. If Chris Brown’s suaveness and Nas’s debatable win or loss here isn’t enough to rocket it past the top then we might have to start writing that the world was Minaj fatigued and the whole paint-by-numbers concept of RR should send her back to the drawing board of mixing rap & pop and then proceeding to toss a glittery colored wig rocket at it.

Here’s what we get when we go out and buy Mayer Hawthorne records hard copy, we miss snazzy records such as the “mostly-chorus-and-somewhat-of-a-verse-but-it’s-still-groovy” “Henny & Gingerale”. It resides as an iTunes only single where Mayer is busy snapping his fingers being the live of the party while playing a game of sip & pass ala DMX. Such a shame that we missed his Houston show, heard it was a doozy – or at least that’s how those gents who wear masks tell it.

The former N-Dex now runs by Dex Owusu (his government name) and considers himself able and willing to carry OKC hip-hop on his back much like Kevin Durant wears all of the loves of his life. “Loud City” takes an orchestral loop and combines it with repetitive snares and Dex’s slightly hilarious swag raps where he admits to slanging pitbulls, drugs and everything in between.
