Mixtape: J The S – The Last Days

January 30, 2012 in Mixtapes

The last chance encounter I had with Boston’s Jake The Snake was on the streets of Austin for SXSW 2011. Boston sports of course was the main topic of discussion as well as his spot on a showcase so everything was slightly rushed at a preset pace. Nearly a year later after “Last Ticket To The Bandwagon” made me a believer, J The S returns with The Last Days, a free effort where social awareness is the name of the game.

Styles P finds himself cutting new ideas and common sense in your skin on “Razor”, The Kickdrums, Emilio Rojas (“Shadows”) & Pill (“Simple Man”) are all on bard, equally forthright in their efforts to bring about sweeping change to your conscious, whether it be in Beantown’s colors of red, white & blue or not. Grab the tape after the jump via DJBooth.

On Joe Cool & “Cooley Hi”

January 27, 2012 in Familiarize Yourself, Features, Mixtapes

“I wanna sell drugs.” – Joe Cool; “Cooley High”

Louisiana rappers are type cast in the same generalized bubble most Southern emcees are. This isn’t a moment to rehash the old “all Southern rappers are slow” rhetoric that has been disproven time & time again, it’s here to make a point. While he may not contain the accent and the easy to notice drawl, Joe Cool does establish something on his first full length mixtape to the masses, an identity.

Alley Boy Goes After T.I. & Young Jeezy On “I Want In”

January 26, 2012 in Mixtapes

In the land of goon rap, you’re only as good as your last sale in the hood. Alley Boy might be drumming up buzz with his latest mixtape Nigganati and track numero nine, “I Want In”. Sampling Christopher Walken’s performance in King Of New York, Alley spares the feelings of no one, including those two men who previously “f*cked da city up” in T.I. & Young Jeezy.

The young eating its predecessors is nothing new in hip-hop these days. The bait & response technique has put some foots in the door and slammed shut on others. Yet, Alley keeps everything so not subliminal that you can easily see where his shots are intended. Whether or not they dignify a response from the OG trappers of Atlanta are another story.

Mixtape: MUG – Money And Pain

January 26, 2012 in Mixtapes

The third member of Slim Thug’s “Money Team” bilks Thugga’s Thug Thursdays series to debut his own solo mixtape. Placing him in the Boss Hogg pecking order and he can be seen as the slightly softer version of J-Dawg. Which isn’t to say J-Dawg is soft, it’s to say that MUG may not be as menacing or likely to pray for you after he puts a bullet or nine in you. He’s a rather introspective and reflective big man who loves his family among the usual assortments of weed and good times.

Money And Pain comes rolling out of the gate feeling like a big time album instead of a collection of mp3s tied together by singular artist. There’s multiple tracks produced from Cy Fyre, GL Productions as well as an assortment from Trakk Sounds & others. Scarface shows up for the recently leaked “Chase” and Trae Tha Truth makes a few notable appearances. But for the most part, through pulsating drums and a linebacker’s ferocity, there’s MUG making sure we’re all away that the BHO squad is about as diverse as its ever been.

Mixtape: Hollywood FLOSS – The Legend Begins

January 26, 2012 in Mixtapes

After one premiere via The Source, Hollywood Floss delivers a quickstrike following last year’s One Fan At A Time. His newest tape comes equipped with all Chris Rockaway production and the lone feature from John Dew. A bit more Houston tinged that his previous releases, Floss’ letting people know where he’s from, not just how talented he possibly can be.

Mixtape: Masspike Miles – Say Hello to Forever

January 24, 2012 in Mixtapes

Maybach Music Group’s RnB magnate Masspike Miles has finally let loose for public consumption his highly anticipated mixtape, #SayHellotoForever. It’s been no small feat for Miles to drum up support and a following in the last two months, as most people weren’t too aware he was a part of Officer Ricky’s label. None the less, propelled forward by the lead single “Love Come Down,” Masspike is more than prepared to make his mark on the music world this year.

Say Hello to Forever features production from Roc & Mayne, Cozmo, Frankinstien, Cardiak Sarah J, and Masspike Miles himself, just to name a few. It has also has Miles collaborating with a few features, such as Fred The Godson, J-Rell, Wiz Khalifa, Raekwon, Smoke Bulga, Lo-K3Y, and Torch. I’m anticipating a hint of Michael Jackson to appear on the Cozmo-produced track “Moonwalk,” though.

Feel free to put it in rotation with Elle Varner’s mixtape released yesterday to get a double-dose of two of the voices that have all but sounded the call that REAL RnB is back.

Stream and download #SayHellotoForever below; or, if that’s not enough Masspike for you, you’ll be able to cop a Deluxe Edition – complete with a custom comic book – on iTunes soon.

Mixtape: Cannon – Yours Truly

January 24, 2012 in Familiarize Yourself, Mixtapes

One feature usually leads to a growing interest. Take Cannon for example. His inclusion on the snare heavy and shit talking uproar that was Hoodstar Chantz’ “Take A Picture” invited us to figure out his appeal and what else could behind his mental aside from talking plenty of shit. Well, when standing next to Chantz you’re permitted to do such things but that’s besides the point.

Mixtape: Saigon – Warning Shots 3

January 24, 2012 in Mixtapes

Sai-giddy returns with the third edition of Warning Shots with Just Blaze as the host. Think around this time last year when Sai finally had an album ready for us in The Greatest Story… and it proved to be a critically acclaimed record. Not only did it prove that Just Blaze is a master behind the boards, it also reaffirms the idea that the album could have been made in 2007 and still retain a sound that will never be lost.

Mixtape: Elle Varner – Conversational Lush

January 23, 2012 in Mixtapes

So… it’s NOT an album. But that said, the most refreshing voice in RnB in at least the last five years, Elle Varner, has finally given her fans a full-length project via SoundCloud to listen to until her major label debut later this year. Varner’s mixtape, Conversational Lush, features a wealth of brand new joints that you may not have heard outside of early leak “Refill.” Amongst the mixtape’s production credits are Bei Maejor and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League.

I have pretty high hopes that Conversational Lush will both reassure current Elle Varner fans and garner her some new ones at the start of 2012. Good for her, because make no mistake – she’s going to be a major player in RnB this year.
