The Outro – Jay-Z’s “9/11 Freestyle”

September 11, 2011 in Knockin' Off Dust

In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the attacks on September 11th, numerous tributes have occurred across the country. From the unveiling of the September 11th Memorial in New York, the memorial to those who lost their lives on Flight 93 as well as those who died at the Pentagon, the entire country has been enveloped in a sense of solemn remembrance and pride.

During this period ten years ago, Jay-Z was riding a wave of his own. Having solidified himself as arguably the “mythical” King of New York in the wake of the death of his close friend The Notorious B.I.G., Jay made no qualms about being the best, tossing darts at other New Yorkers on the famed Summer Jam stage earlier that summer.

When it came down to his particular release day for The Blueprint, Hov couldn’t have foreseen the casualties of that day. As a matter of fact as Hov will admit, his reaction to supporting those who hemmed him up most of his life would be met with deaf ears. Still, Jay changed his tune while on tour, delivering a freestyle about the victims in true Jiggaman fashion. Shocked no one picked up on the “I’m not a Christian line”.

The Outro – Lil Wayne’s Original “Takeover”

September 6, 2011 in Knockin' Off Dust

Let’s go back to 2004, shall we? The summer in bits and pieces belonged to a then underrated Lil Wayne who decided it was best to quit playing around with rapping and make things seem serious on his end. Obviously, no one in Cash Money knew what the Tha Carter would evolve into today at the time but by allowing Weezy touch Mannie Fresh‘s Mind Of Mannie Fresh album may have proved to be a blessing in disguise.

Running off of the fuel from those Sqad Up mixtapes, Weezy literally sneaks into the booth and lays down two quick freestyles neatly tucked away on to Fresh’s album aside from his guest features on “Lady Lady” with R. Kelly & “We Fresh”. Did Fresh mind that Hollygrove’s finest decided to latch on with the sort of gun talk and murdering on the same album that featured “Real Big”? Not at all really considering that album was 30(!) tracks deep. Well, unless you take into account his reaction to Weezy going off in the booth on two separate occasions.

Wayne’s Takeover was aptly titled, serving as the precursor to Weezymania that spanned three consecutive years and sadly signaled the beginning of the end of collabs between he & Fresh.

Knockin’ Off Dust: Dreams Money Can Buy

May 22, 2011 in Knockin' Off Dust

A few days ago, Drake unleashed “Dreams Money Can Buy” and obviously people pointed hard towards the alleged Jay-Z diss in the song (which it wasn’t). Since we don’t play into reaches, we’ll go ahead and pull the sample from under Noah “40″ Shebib‘s production template. That revolving “Don’t f*ck with me” line stands out heavily as Drake once again goes through his well-known insecurities about fame & fortune.

Sample Set: Big K.R.I.T. – Return of 4Eva (Pt. 1)

April 19, 2011 in Knockin' Off Dust

Big K.R.I.T. has had numerous words said about him between these web pages, enough for a shrine if I wanted to. While the bulk of Return of 4Eva is built upon his southern drawl and penchant for a trunk rattling mix of street gospel and anthemic overtones, it’s the old school soul that prefaces all of it.

Tye over at Fake Shore Drive compiled the samples from some of R4‘s most notable songs, packing them together in one nicely twisted zip file for the folks. There’s a love for samples and dusty vinyl lovers like myself as we love seeing what producers use to create their newest works and K.R.I.T. went all over the place from Marvin Gaye to Roy Ayers in order to craft his latest classic. EP: Jett I. Masstyr – Relationsh*t (Instrumentals & Samples)

April 19, 2011 in EPs, Knockin' Off Dust

As a sucker for sample sets, I couldn’t blame anyone for immediately wanting hasHBrown‘s Relaitonshit in its producerial essence (c. Phonte). Lauded already for being one of Houston’s best releases in the first quarter of 2011, the rapper/producer gives everyone what they want by releasing the cache of instrumentals used to make Relationshit such a great project.

The producer alter ego Jett I. Masstyr had other ideas in mind and since it was he that put in the work to give the project a backbone, he enlisted the help of H.I.S.D‘s own DJ Flash Gordon Parks to drop in a mix of the samples used to create the EP. After hearing bits of these samples while interviewing the man about a month or so ago, I’m glad to see these finally available to the public.

Sample Set: Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

November 18, 2010 in Knockin' Off Dust

Unlike half of the blogosphere (alright, 90% of it) I have yet to listen to the retail version of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. With Universal sending out bogus C&Ds over Kanye’s “masterpiece” work, there’s something they can’t touch: all the samples that went into it.

Thanks to Drew from Fake Shore Drive, we get all the oldies that got cut, spliced, interloped and wrapped around Kanye West’s “creative output”. Download links after the jump.

History Lesson: Oliver Sain’s “On The Hill”

September 18, 2010 in Knockin' Off Dust

It’s no secret that jazz & the blues are deeply rooted in hip-hop. Those horns and drums from the fifties and sixties have given fans some luscious backdrops to some of the best songs in the genre. Oliver Sain’s “On The Hill” boasts such respectable traits as well as its heavy in saxophone and traditional instrumentation. Recently, a nice following of artists have taken Sain’s work and decided for better or worse to throw at least sixteen bars over it. In the past decade at least, numerous artists have flipped Sain’s saxophone and went to work.

Knockin’ Off Dust: Birds Flyin’ High

June 1, 2010 in Knockin' Off Dust

Back in 2006, after Lil Wayne had finished releasing Dedication 2 and Weezymania was beginning to take shape, there was a rumored collaboration effort between him and Juelz Santana that sadly never saw the light of day. Everything the duo did release found itself on a countless number of mixtapes. To me, the best one was the I Can’t Feel My Face prequel “Blow” with Mick Boogie. Scanning through all my newly acquired Nina Simone, I found this doozy. I doubt we’ll ever get I Can’t Feel My Face (or any number of announced collaboration efforts with Wayne) but those are a sign o’ the times (c. Prince).

SAMPLED: Loose Ends – “Hanging on A String”

SAMPLED BY: Wiz Khalifa – “The Kid Frankie”

It’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these so how about we get the obvious ones out of the way first? When Wiz dropped Kush & Orange Juice earlier this year, it was well received by weed heads and bloggers alike. We like it when an artist finds his niche and runs with it. For Wiz, it’s talking about stealing your girl, smoking weed and living the fly life. When listening to “The Kid Frankie”, the sample is easily recognizable. That Loose Strings record (video up top) is one of the best intros to a song ever. Complex lost for not including it in its top 100 samples list.
