Checks & Balances: Why Magazine Editors Shouldn’t Hosts Mixtapes

December 30, 2011 in Guest Blogs

Ed. Note: Taking a stance on the news that Rick Ross’ upcoming mixtape will be hosted by XXL’s own Shaheem Reid, Mehka King director of the upcoming documentary In The Mixx: DJ’s Doin’ Work decided on crafting an op-ed piece on the matter. While we understand the notion of a magazine itself hosting a tape (see XXL presenting Elzhi’s Elmatic tape), such action taken by an EIC is bound to cause plenty of skepticism.

Event Recap: Hip-Hop Showdown @ Dean’s (11/30)

December 1, 2011 in Events, Guest Blogs

Hollywood FLOSS decided to do us a slight favor by covering the Hip-Hop Showdown at Dean’s last night. Once a newcomer cutting teeth at various showcases across the city, Floss has morphed into a one man do everything as an artist, self-promoter and host. Did we disregard his wishes? Not at all. As a matter of fact, we’re running this thing without any edits or restrictions.

Last night at Dean’s was a solid event, kept a steady crowd for all entertainers who performed. The show featured acts Bishop Black, Franchise N Yung, Richie Roc, White D, EDF, Roderick Vonn, Dam Foolz and more. My sole purpose for the event is to provide an outlet for new artist, just as Mission Control did for me when I started performing. I told the artist I would have no favoritism and would tell the truth of what I liked and didn’t like about the performances. I’m no Kanye West, but truth is truth in my eyes, and if you want me to recommend you to other venues or shows, I have to be truthful!

Rob Jay On Finding Success In Rap After Age 30

November 9, 2011 in Guest Blogs

The idea that a rapper can find his creative zen past the age of 30 has been dolled around for quite a while now. We’ve placed age on a weird pedestal in hip-hop, slinging shots towards those who’ve paved the way that are now in their forties and fifties.

Rob Jay, always one to be outspoken about anything when you find him, took the time to pen this essay about age in hip-hop. The recent release of his Millionaire Before 30 EP only makes this an additive to that. Either that or an excerpt from his recent book, How To Get Your Music Posted In Hip Hop Blogs (purchase here) Catch Rob’s thoughts after the jump.

P.O.V.: Marco Torres On His Five Favorite Photos

July 5, 2011 in Guest Blogs, Up In The Air

If you’re in and around Houston’s hip-hop concert scene, then you have either seen or been privileged to meet Marco Torres. The Houston native and freelance photographer for the Houston Press has been on the scene for numerous events and concerts around the city, most recently hitting Trae Tha Truth‘s Street King show at House of Blues (as well as having his photos featured on numerous hip-hop blogs and magazines). Since we bump into each other on a frequent basis, I pitched to Marco the idea of spotlighting five of his favorite shots from various events in the city and speak on each photo in his own words.

Honorable mentions? Try these shots of Slim Thug, Bun B & Devin The Dude. Time to hear Marco explain himself.

Review: Fight Night Champion

March 4, 2011 in Geek Squad, Guest Blogs

Day & A Dream’s squad of writers improved recently with the addition of JaySkrew to be our quote-unquote games guru. Considering the fact that I’m on the biggest NBA 2K fix out, it was only right Skrew picked up the slack in reviewing the hottest games he thinks are worth coping. Here’s his take on EA’s latest boxing offering, Fight Night Champion. While we couldn’t pay him in the best green known to man, he was still happy to oblige.

“The King of the Ring” returns with Fight Night Champion which is EA’s latest installment in the Fight Night series. The First EA Sports Title with a Mature Rating! The Game has improved a lot since last year, but still has some hidden flaws. Yes there is still the good, the bad, and the UGLY. First things first….

Graphics wise EA has improved a lot since Round 4.  With over 50 licensed boxers (YES ZAB JUDAH AND BUTTERBEAN ARE BACK) each one looks at least 95% dead on to their real life counterpart and gone are the cartoonish looks we saw in Round 4. Example: When Tyson had the signature part in his fade…yeah it’s in the game. Shane Mosley’s tribal art tattoos are crafted onto the player model just as he has them in real life. Now the muscle flex engine that they had in Round 4 has also been improved also you can literally see the muscles flex on screen as Tyson brings that super knockout right over hand of his!  So expect that when you pick your favorite boxer he will fight and move about the ring just as he would in real life.  Also be prepared for BLOOD. Since this is the first Mature Rated EA Sports title when your boxer gets beaten to a pulp expect more than just a bruised eye.  Blood will appear on your boxers face, chest, and trunks.

Benchwarmers: When The Sideline Isn’t Enough

January 4, 2010 in Guest Blogs

Not exactly a battle of the sexes but more of a collaboration of them. Here’s how this came about. Saturday night after coming back from the festivities L-Boogie threw, The Egyptian One hits me up telling me she’s been writing a piece on being on the “Sideline”: basically why people are made to be boyfriend/girlfriend #2s and what actions do you make to either quit the team or be promoted to a starting role. We fleshed it out a little Sunday and today and came up with this product. Hopefully it’ll draw some discussion here and there.

Cousin Megan – “Mirrors”

November 22, 2009 in Guest Blogs

First thing I saw (besides the fact that I love whenever my cousin writes anything thought provoking or interesting) was that I kept playing this Wale song, “Diary” in my head. Probably one of the dopest tracks out right now and I put the words to the beat and it made perfect damn sense. These aren’t Brandon’s words, rather those from a woman. Pay attention.

The Egyptian One: Resentment

November 20, 2009 in Guest Blogs

Disclaimer: I know this isn’t as organized as my other blogs have been, and I apologize if it’s hard to follow. I was writing very sporadically.

“I thought I could forgive you and I know you’ve changed
As much as I wanna trust you, I know it ain’t the same
And it’s all because you lied”

Everybody makes mistakes. Everyone has their fcuk-ups and everyone has their bad days. Nobody’s perfect.

I will be the first to say that I’ve had my share of mess-ups. I’ve done many things in the past that I’m not particularly proud of, as has everyone else. I’ve alienated people I love, I’ve alienated myself, and I’ve made negative choices that affect the people around me, as has everyone else. However, I’ve learned from my mistakes and I make sure I don’t repeat them. I grow as a person, as has everyone else.. right?

The Insanity of Sex

November 9, 2009 in Guest Blogs

glen-quagmire

Wait, you mean I didn’t write this? Yeah, TheEgyptianOne did. I might as well give her and the rest of the ladies who read this blog their own little section. Ah well, blame Trey Songz, R&B videos and general sexuality for this one. I mean, who’s horoscope tells them they are going to be horny as hell the ENTIRE month? Ah well, I’m gonna let her words take over.
