For the better part of three generations, DC Comics has been synonymous with not only comic books but pop culture as a whole. The brand which birthed such iconic heroes as Superman, Batman & more recently unveiled its new logo, a peel style variant which celebrates the company’s newfound emphasis on storytelling and honoring the heritage of its characters.

Summer 2012 can’t get here soon enough. Marvel’s The Avengers film has been in the works ever since superhero movies became a thing in Hollywood. Now I can imagine Thor bashing people in the head with his hammer and Iron Man firing off one liners about how much of an a-hole he is. Sit back and watch the trailer to a fanboy’s ultimate wet dream.

Honestly, who’s going to believe a comic book about the 26-year old billionaire getting a gun pulled on him like he’s Soulja Boy or something. If that’s the case then SB has street cred and so does Zuckerberg and if Zuckerberg has street cred then we might have people rapping over “Hard In Da Paint” that went to Yale and can only tell you street stories from what they heard from Rick Ross. Fictitious, fictitious.

It’s a Fantastic Four farewell with the revelation Tuesday of who among them has been selected to be written out of the super hero team.

While Marvel Entertainment has made no secret that a member of the quartet, which was introduced in August 1961, would die, exactly who among the group would fall has been a closely held secret, until the release of issue No. 587.

It’s the Human Torch, leaving teammates Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman and the Thing to pick up the pieces and move forward.

Fifty years after cosmic rays transformed him into a man ablaze, the Human Torch will burn no more as the pop culture purveyor of super heroes and villains embarks on an ambitious story line that ends the Fantastic Four.

Since x-Men in 2000, film adaptations of our favorite comic books growing up have been the go to device for Hollywood action movies. Some have been awesome in both direction and style and others have plain sucked. There may not be one group of people harder to please on the internet than those who want accurate depictions of the heroes they grew up on. Which is why getting the costume right is probably the second biggest thing to a fanboy aside from who’s playing the title character and who wrote the film.

Marvel has plenty invested into the successful launch of its Avengers film and with 2011 already boasting releases from DC in the form of Green Lantern and the announcement of the third Batman film, Stan Lee’s creations are fighting back.

Yes, in an alternate universe Steve Rogers & Johnny Storm are one in the same. If you’re unfamiliar with Captain America’s story then it’s probably the simplest of all the Marvel tales: WW II fighter pilot gets injected with a super serum that turns him into America’s one man machine for truth, justice and the American way. The costume is pretty much on point considering the time period and the material in the day. Getting Spiderman right was a little more of a challenge, given the fact that Sony is rebooting the franchise after booting Tobey Maguire and being forced to sit through the absolute shit storm that is the Broadway production of the web-slinger.

Things could have gotten even worse but then fate happened and star Andrew Garfield turned in a sterling performance in the Golden Globe winning film The Social Network, Emma Stone was picked as Gwen Stacy and Marc Webb was attached to direct and the last film I saw with Webb’s name on it was 500 Days of Summer. In other words, it’ll be the Peter Parker juggling dual lives story comic fans have wanted. Spidey doesn’t drop until July 2012 but Capt comes with a blue shield (probably marketed in 3D) later this July.

One of my favorite online comics finally has a seventh issue. Drayonis spent almost a good eighteen months putting this together which given the time period between issue six and now should have felt like an eternity. I’m a fan of DC Comics through and through and think the minds working there put out a top notch product whether it revolves around their big two of Superman or Batman. By naming Ryan Reynolds the main guy in their upcoming Green Lantern film, Warner Bros. essentially went with the motive of having an actor who has some comedic chops for relief and also has the body to pull the role off.

As Lee Corso would say, not so fast my friend.

Even though you can’t tell a whole lot about the film by the trailer (other than it’s so-so CGI), you kind of feel bad for Hollywood in attempting to promote their film when a fan did a better job. While I’ll forever find myself spending money on decent looking comic flicks I might be a little weary of Hal Jordan when I know The Avengers, Capt. America & Thor are right around the corner.

I’m a fan of comic books, especially classic ones such as Spiderman, Green Lantern & of course Batman. Kenny Keil goes a step further and interpolates classic comic books with classic hip-hop covers. More covers under the cut.
