Mike Checc plays in the dark in the new music video for his “Since When Freestyle.”

Two weeks ago, Mike Checc formally announced “Mike Checc Mondays,” a campaign of sorts where the Houston emcee would drop new content all summer. The 7TEEN5 ambassador kicked things off with a freestyle over Young Nudy’s “Since When” single, a blistering opening for what was sure to be a very hot summer to come. After all, the rapper is insisting “#ThisMyBeatNow,” and he just might be jackin’ for beats the next weeks. This, after he had already kicked off the year strong by sharing his ‘The Checc In’ tape.

This Monday brought with it an official set of visuals for Mike’s “Since When Freestyle.” The music video has Checc sparking up and talking shop amongst his friends. They’re not exactly in the “house of pain” the rapper mentions in his freestyle. It’s more like a funhouse, albeit one completely shrouded in darkness.

However, director Wandeezy (of Houston’s self-anointed “Twin Photographers,” The Oyili Sisters) uses the shadows in a very creative way. The softest of neon-colored lighting frames Mike’s silhouette and somewhat exposes the artwork on the walls behind him. The flame from a lighter as a blunt is ignited briefly lights up the whole room. And Mike’s token golden grill somehow manages to be the brightest thing of all.
