Are you ready to go back to Wakanda? Then look no further.

This is D3 The Concrete, bringing you fashion from the street. I, like many others who were not under a rock, in the Pacific Ocean, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, went to go see the movie, Black Panther. It was great and I make no apologies for that.

So, you can imagine the excitement that I got when I saw a group of Black Chicagoans had organized the first WakandaCon, to be held in the 3rd largest city in America, from August 3 – 5, 2018.

The three-day event is organized by a team of African-American Chicago residents: siblings David, Ali, and Matt Barthwell; along with entrepreneur Lisa Beasley and producer Taylor Witten. The event will feature panels, lectures, workshops, and live entertainment.

Ali Barthwell, when asked about the inspiration for Wakandacon, said the following: “The moment we saw Wakanda in film, we wanted a space to gather and talk about everything African-Americans are passionate about. Afro-Futurism is about imagining a future for Black people all around the world. Wakandacon is a space for Black people to look past the present and into our future”.
