After a lengthy hiatus, Ashton Travis drops a brand new loosie.

Ashton Travis’s name last appeared on this very page in 2012. Before that, it was a 20112011 when we were looking back at his Good Vibes mixtape. There were jazz interpolations, a more dramatic, heady delivery and Travis seemingly running at a pace ahead of his peers. “If You Didn’t Know” pleaded with listeners with appeals of his words meaning something. In the six (!) years between raps at Howard University and now, Ashton Travis became a “what if,” a Houston rap entity that existed and flickered before fading into his thoughts and life. Six years later, a good friend of his in Travis Scott is now the city’s biggest rap star. Any mention of new music that emits from Scott’s Twitter account gets cursory listens. That includes the first Ashton Travis single in years.

“Exactly” shows the growth and transition in AT’s delivery. Melodic and sweetened to a perked up drum and snare creation, the Good Vibes rapper sings about obtaining the material things, how his friends are far too wild to be calmed down and sticking out in a room full of non-decipherable faces. “When I leave, bet I come back clean,” he sings. “When I glow up, bet these b*tches show up.” In the two days since “Exactly” popped up on SoundCloud, it’s been played over 77,000 times – either a direct correlation to Scott’s initial tweet or some Ash diehards that have been patiently waiting for something new. Either way, Ashton Travis is back, and we’re better off for it.
