Jidenna, the self-anointed Chief of Wondaland (and Insecure cameo killer), returns with a surprise new EP, ‘Boomerang.’

Of all the artists on Janelle Monae’s Wondaland Records imprint, Jidenna may have shone the brightest in 2016 (besides Monae herself, of course). Last year, the rapper rode the wave of his breakout single, “Classic Man,” into a few other solid cuts (“The Let Out” and “Hail to The Chief,” which was featured on the first season of Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix). He piggybacked that with the release of a well-regarded debut project, ‘The Chief.’ Oh, and he also made a nice cameo on the first season of Issa Rae’s HBO series Insecure.

Man of many talents though he may be, Jidenna was aware that his fans were clambering for new music. And so, the rapper took to Twitter earlier this week to tease a new project, an EP entitled simply ‘Boomerang.’ Jidenna set ‘Boomerang’s’ release date for Friday, and further built up anticipation for the project by sharing its tracklisting. True to his word, Jidenna dropped ‘Boomerang’ on all major streaming formats at midnight.

Six tracks deep, ‘Boomerang’ is produced entirely by Diplo. Just like its predecessor ‘The Chief,’ ‘Boomerang’ thrives off music that’ll keep bodies in a space moving. The Tiwa Savage-assisted “Spy Candy” relies on a deceptively-simple hook and might be a lurk culture anthem in the making. “Bambi Too” builds on the smooth original from his debut with a little help from Maleek Berry, Sarkodie, and Quavo. And album closer “Out of Body,” which bears solid assists from Dot Cromwell and Wale, could sneak into the end of the year turn-up functions playlists. All of this is tucked into a clever narrative that’s bridged with “voicemails” from a bitter lover at both the EP’s beginning and end.
