Denzel Washington’s latest legal thriller Roman J. Israel, Esq. has an official trailer and you can see it below.

Denzel Washington’s first film since the Oscar-nominated Fences in 2016 is him right in his element. Playing a no-nonsense, snappy lawyer, the Academy Award winner may be up for more consideration with his new film, Roman J. Israel, Esq. Directed by Nightcrawler‘s Dan Gilroy, the film centers around Israel (Washington) as he attempts to juxtapose his lauded activist history with the seedy underbelly of the Los Angeles criminal justice system. A series of turbulent events look to challenge that notion and with any Denzel character, the flaws of man play a prominent trait.

Gilroy, who wrote the original treatment of the film, had Washington in mind for the titular character. Roman is defined by his belief in something greater than himself. He’s a man of faith. He has this common, universal humanity to him that he believes. Denzel, if you research Denzel, he’s literally a man of faith,” Gilroy told EW, who premiered the trailer. “So it was never going to be hard for the audience to buy into the idea that the actor playing the part believes in the things Roman is doing. I think one of the reasons why Denzel dissolves into the character is because they’re so close to each other in so many ways. Denzel embodies the idea of a man living his life on terms that are based on a cause — going toward something. That’s why I really wrote it for him.”

Co-starring Carmen Ejojo, Colin Farrell, DeRon Horton, Joseph David-Jones and more, Roman J. Israel, Esq. openes in theaters this November.
