Before ‘Traphouse Jodeci 2’ arrives, Ye Ali drops off a hold-over EP, ‘Passion & Patience.’

Count on Ye Ali to set the mood almost effortlessly. The West Coast crooner, who burst onto the scene in 2015 and dropped his official debut LP, ‘Traphouse Jodeci,’ last year, has made it his motif to craft quality slow jams. At one point, Ye Ali had plans to drop a joint EP with Houston’s own Kirko Bangz, but that has seemingly been left behind. In its stead, Ye Ali has committed instead to putting together ‘Traphouse Jodeci’s’ sequel

But it’s not really a summer for lovers if the lovers don’t have music to cuddle up with. A summer release was always in the cards for Ye Ali: he’d initially planned to drop something on June 16th. It may have arrived a few weeks after, but Ye Ali made good on his word, releasing not ‘Traphouse Jodeci 2’ but a new EP, ‘Passion & Patience. Originally a three-track Soundcloud set, the singer blew it up into a full-blown seven track affair. And ‘Passion & Patience’ should make the wait for ‘THJ2’ more bearable for Ye Ali fans.

Seven tracks deep, ‘Passion & Patience’ bears features from Izaiah, Johnny Yukon, and Eric Bellinger. Previous leaks “Big Body Benz” (a standout collab with Bellinger) and “Talk Less” appear on the EP. Cleverly, the project departs from the usual by starting out with an interlude (“Spring Semester Interlude”) and maintains a smooth ride from there. But ‘Passion & Patience’ also shows Ye Ali experimenting with different kinds of sounds. He attempts an EDM/danceclub cut on the Johnny Yukon-assisted “Mixing.” He even dips into island grooves on “Midnight Stand” and “Closer.” If nothing else, on ‘Passion & Patience,’ the Traphouse Jodeci is expanding his arsenal and talents. And he can only possibly get better from here.
