Bun B returns to wake the game up with a new song, “Gametime.”

You know what this summer’s been missing? A dose of trill.

And who better to bring the trill and Southern sound back to the forefront, than Bun B? The self-anointed Trill OG hasn’t dropped any new solo music of his own for a minute. But timing is everything and Bun felt the time had finally come for him to emerge from the shadows. The Houston rapper shared a brand new single, “Gametime,” on Friday.

Bun sets a tone from the song’s opening bars: “Yeah, b*tch, I been gone, but I’m back now/ so all you fake motherf*ckas need to back down!” That’s just the first of a series of vicious bars in which Bun sets himself – and, by extension, Texas – apart for a two-and-a-half minutes. In keeping with the song’s theme, “Gametime” functions on marching band-esque horns, steady tapping drums, and a riding beat that makes the listener feel like they’re on the field. But Bun’s words at the song’s end (“Get ready, motherf*cka, ’cause it’s GameTime!”) sound like a declaration. Does UGK’s living half have more to new on the way? If so, the South may need that expeditiously. It’s just a shame there’s no football games in the summer, because you can damn near already HEAR HBCU marching bands bringing “GameTime” to life.
