OVO Sound crooner PARTYNEXTDOOR drops a new EP out of the blue, COLOURS 2.

We can be honest as a family. PARTYNEXTDOOR 3 was not what we were expecting following the exceptional PND2 from PARTYNEXTDOOR. Luckily, PND has kept himself locked away in the studio and in the middle of the night, fans were treated to COLOURS 2, a short and sensual EP. (If you’re wondering “Wait, where was there a COLOURS one?” don’t worry, you’re not alone: the first EP dropped three winters ago back in 2014)

Rather than running together like one long extended play, COLOURS 2 sets a mood in a variety of ways. There’s the smooth, “u up” text anthem in the making “Freak In You,” with Young Thug, which is peppered with references to Jodeci from the song’s title (of course) to mentions of songs like “Come And Talk To Me.” There’s “Low Battery,” a spiritual successor to last year’s “Not Nice” to remind fans that PARTY could soundtrack a bash-ment if he really wanted to.

But COLOURS 2 also feels urgent. Not rushed, mind you – but urgent in that PND understands his time is limited with the one he wants and that he must make the most of it. That’s communicated from the jump, with the “I gotta handle my business but I wanna see you soon” mood of intro cut “Peace Of Mind.” At four tracks and barely 17 minutes in length, COLOURS 2 feels like a quickie. That’s because it is – but damn if PARTYNEXTDOOR doesn’t make sure it’s a satisfying one.
