The mysterious singer with the golden voice, H.E.R. drops her latest single, “Lights On,” on the first New Music Friday of June.

Suffice to say, H.E.R. isn’t quite the “surprise” in 2017, that she was last year. The singer’s debut project, the H.E.R., Vol. 1 EP, allowed her to redefine herself from being “just” singer-songwriter Gabi Wilson into a more mysterious, seductive figure. H.E.R. soundtracked plenty of fans’ lonely nights last year. This year, however, is different.

The singer’s H.E.R., Vol. 2, EP arrives two weeks from now, but this marked a big week for her. There was news of a summer tour alongside Bryson Tiller and Metro Boomin. There was a solid appearance on Snakehips’ new “Right Now” single with ELHAE and D.R.A.M. The singer closed out her big week by sharing the latest leak from Vol. 2, “Lights On.”

A three-and-a-half minute slow burn, “Lights On” maintains the steamy feel of its predecessors “Every Kind of Way” and “Say It Again,” with H.E.R. understanding why she and her lover are here and wanting to “try something new.” “I’m not a stranger to the foreplay,” the singer coos on the hook, not ashamed to hide her yearning. But “Lights On” is new territory for H.E.R, too.; it’s the most upbeat song in her seductive arsenal thus far, with its pulsating synths, guitars, and keys paying a slight homage to ’80s R&B.
