beatking astroworld 2

Astroworld 2 features Blac Youngsta, Sauce Walka, Maxo Kream, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Gangsta Boo and more.

The obvious thing about BeatKing is his influences. Since the late Lord Infamous, no one in the South emphasizes the kind of choke you off rap voice that BeatKing possesses. It’s loud, uncanny and you immediately recognize it the moment he jumps on a track. Between being a love child of Southern rap tracks, from early Three 6 to Tela and more, BeatKing makes certain to throw more than a few easy to grasp samples exist on his tapes.

Astroworld 2, the sequel to the 2013 mixtape that stretched from Houston to Dallas continues this trend. “Scream” for example carries those same bloated notes from David Banner and Lil Flip’s “Like A Pimp”. “Houston MF Texas” only snatches up Blac Youngsta constantly yelling “Houston motherf*ckin’ Texas” but swaps BeatKing’s hallucinating drum routine for Three 6 Mafia’s “Who Run It”. Just for the hell of it, he unites Texas and Memphis even further by venturing back to 2003’s Da Unbreakables and “Smokin’ On The Dro” with Pimp C, Juicy J and DJ Paul. Gangsta Boo, the greatest guest he ever had (see Underground Cassette Tape Music) shows up here to tell you that her tongue is gold — and that’s all that need be said.

Perhaps the best moment on Astroworld 2 is the off the cuff one of “Dungeon Drop Freestyle”. Twisting up UGK and Ludacris’ “Stick ‘Em Up” and 8Ball and MJG’s “Don’t Flex”, Slim reverts to his “Drophead” level of in pocket rapping. Same for Paul Wall, screens falling, still crawling. When BeatKing can tap dance around being a full-fledged ’90s Houston rapper, he shines every single time.
