Wednesday afternoon marked the end of the Know Your Status tour at the Sawyer Auditorium at Texas Southern University.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation kicked off the multi-city tour at Florida A&M University early this month with social media and pop culture influencers Nina Parker, Karen Civil, Don Benjamin, Amber Rose, Ari Lennox, Cordell Broadus, Kent Jones, and Shannon Boodram.

Cordell Broadus, panelist

The purpose of the panel was to educate students about safe sex practices, proper steps to avoid contracting a sexually transmitted disease or infection, and, if already infected, how to fight the disease and live as normal and fulfilling a life as possible. Students were incentivized to get tested with a custom t-shirt and entered to win prizes including a $5,000 student scholarship, a free “Pimp My Dorm Room,” and a tablet giveaway.

Chris Grace, founder of AHF’s KYST initiative explained that he wanted to start the tour to give college students a safe place to talk about sex. He said, “Each year, 12 million young people contract an STI and there is an undeniable urgency to target safer sex messages that are interactive, engaging, and relevant to their lives and experiences. With the Know Your Status Tour, we are doing our part to educate our youth on the importance of being tested regularly for STIs and help them form good sexual health habits that they can take with them long into adulthood.”
