dis generation

With “Dis Generation,” A Tribe Called Quest prove that they’re eternally reflective of the times.

Perhaps no album better reflected the celebration, alignment and sorrow of 2016 than A Tribe Called Quest’s We Got It From Here … Thank You 4 Your Service. Tribe’s sixth and final album spoke of a time in the days following the 2016 election. Of life without Phife Dawg. Of reconciliation and adulation for all parties involved. Whereas many saw the album as a love letter to fans, it played out more as complete affirmation that the Queens group were eternal.

“Dis Generation,” the latest single from the album has a black & white video to it. Directed by Atlanta‘s Hiro Murai, it speaks towards the balance and rhythm that Tribe seemingly brought out at every single turn. There’s Busta Rhymes, laser-focused and jovial. There’s Jarobi, Consequence and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Q-Tip is a centerpiece, never left or right but dead in the middle. And then there’s the missing piece of Phife, looming less like a ghost and more like a championship banner of legacy and importance.

“We don’t have these, like, heavy duty jobs on face value,” Q-Tip told
Noisey in an extensive interview. “But as you look deeper, we deal with the esoteric. We deal with the unseen. We deal with emotion. And we deal with the feeling. Those things are what drive humanity.”
