The We The Best-affiliated artist drops off a Valentine’s Day-inspired new project, Luh Tape.

DJ Khaled’s We The Best label thus far only has one really big “act,” and that’s Kent Jones. The producer-rapper-crooner made a name for himself in 2016 with his breakout single “Don’t Mind.” The song dominated radio from fall 2015 on through spring 2016, and it put Jones firmly in the spotlight. Though Kent’s major label debut under We The Best hasn’t quite surfaced just yet, that hasn’t kept him from working.

Many artists dropped off new music for Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, and Kent Jones was amongst them. He premiered the Luh Tape mixtape exclusively by way of DatPiff; and while his name may not be as big as some of his peers, Luh Tape is an impressive addition to Jones’ resume.

Featuring fourteen tracks of entirely original material, Luh Tape takes off with the smooth and laid-back “Summer Time Lover” and floats along for a little over an hour. Kent Jones himself handles production for a majority of the project, co-producing with IllaDaProducer on some songs and even allowing Smittybeats to hold down the boards solo on “You Just Don’t Get It.” Major Myjah, Dre, and Sons of Mystro appear as features. There are many slow jams (“Came Thru”), but there are some nice surprises on Luh Tape, as well. Jazze Pha appears on album standout “Avalanche,” which lifts the Isley Brothers’ “For the Love Of You” on its hook. He lays out his soul on “Gone Bad,” a bitter but honest account of why it didn’t work out with his lover. And it’s hard to resist the call of the two step, that “Different Lover” will bring out of many listeners.
