merry christmas lil mama cover

With mere days until Christmas, Jeremih and Chance the Rapper collaborate on a surprise holiday-themed EP.

Leave it to Chance The Rapper and Jeremih to get fans in the Christmas spirit with the holiday fast approaching. In the wee hours of Thursday morning, the two Chicago natives let their powers combine to release a new season-inspired EP, Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama.

It marks a strong 2016 in which both artists not only released strong solo offerings – Chance’s Coloring Book album and Jeremih’s Late Nights: Europe mixtape – but also collaborated numerous times throughout the year. What with Jeremih appearing on “Summer Friends” off Coloring Book and the solid loosie “Living Single,” perhaps it was inevitable that the two would work together on a joint project. Jeremih and Chancellor dedicate the project simply as being “For Chicago.”

Nine tracks deep, Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama contains a song for every mood. Whether it’s rekindling a flame (“Stranger At the Table,” on which Jeremih cleverly resurrects the hook from The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”), reminding listeners of the reason for the season (“Chi Town Christmas” sounds like a contemporary Christmas carol), or even getting a little serious for a moment (“I Should’ve Left You” and “The Tragedy” hide potent messages under upbeat instrumentation), Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama’s smooth grooves will be impossible to resist and arrive just in time to play in the background of any last-minute ugly Christmas Sweater parties or day-of gift unwrappings.
