Steve Carrell gets a new foe in Trey Parker for the latest film in the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise

Despicable Me has become one of Dreamworks / Illumination Entertainment’s biggest hits, grossing over a billion dollars worldwide with two films and one spin-off (Minions). The cast of Gru, the girls and the Minions aren’t stopping anytime soon, even when a new villain appears on the radar.

Gru & company return for Despicable Me 3, the third direct film in the franchise in which our now lovable super villain is working for a government agency. Gauging from the first trailer released today, Gru has to deal with something that may be far more greater (and retro) than him. Balthazar Bratt (South Park’s Trey Parker) is a former child star turned supervillain in his own right. Obsessed with the character he played in the ’80s, he’s merely adapted it for 2017 and taken it globally. Expect Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, one random ear ring and all of the unique comedy Parker can bring to the character.

It’s up to Gru and his new partner Lucy (Kristen Wiig) to take down Bratt. Watch the first trailer for Despicable Me 3 below. The film opens next summer, June 30, 2017.
