With Awaken, My Love!, Childish Gambino uses his third studio album to create a soulful, funktastic throwback journey.

It’s been quite the year for Childish Gambino.

The artist governmentally known as Donald Glover premiered his new FX television comedy-drama Atlanta to great acclaim; it not only spawned countless internet memes and discussions, but it earned a renewal barely two episodes into its debut season. And having begun the fall introducing audiences to Black life in the state of Georgia, Glover will conclude it by resurrecting his musician alter ego on his third studio LP, “Awaken, My Love!”. The album released on digital formats at midnight Friday night.

Awaken, My Love! is Gambino’s first album since 2013’s because the internet, though there’s a very stark difference between the two both sonically and in execution. Where Internet was much more contemporary and dabbled in hip-hop and pop, Awaken!‘s eleven tracks rely on the blues and soul to function. The smooth lead single “Me and Your Mama” kicks things off before sliding right on into the funktastic “Have Some Love,” which, once upon a time, might have brought down the house on Don Cornelius’s Soul Train. He goes full B.B. King summoning the blues over a strumming guitar and warbling horns on album standout “Zombies.”
