The Academy Award nominee joins the Black Panther cast in a major role.

Marvel’s Black Panther movie may easily be the most anticipated film of the decade. Never mind that its theatrical release date is still a good year and some change away – Marvel Studios has been stacking the movie’s cast from the jump. Ryan Coogler was tapped to direct, frequent Coogler collaborator Michael B. Jordan was associated with the film, and Academy Award-winning actors Lupita N’yongo and Forrest Whitaker were added to the cast. This, coupled with the fact that Chadwick Boseman all but proved he was worthy of the Wakandan crown with his amazing portrayal of T’Challa in this year’s Captain America: Civil War movie. Black Panther is already leaps and bounds Marvel’s Blackest movie to date.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any Blacker, here comes another one – Angela Bassett is joining Marvel’s Black Panther cast, as well.

Marvel Studios revealed Bassett’s addition to the cast in an official announcement Monday morning. The Best Actress Oscar nominee’s resume is well-known: though Bassett’s most recently famous for her characters in FX’s American Horror Story series, longtime followers of Angela know her best for What’s Love Got to Do With It, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Black Nativity, Waiting to Exhale, and still other films. And what role will Angela Bassett play in the upcoming film? She’s been cast as T’Challa’s mother, Ramonda.

Marvel’s Black Panther lands in theaters February 16, 2018. So close and yet still so far.
