ICYMI: Erykah Badu, OT Genasis, & Rae Sremmurd Headlined Day 2 of Oaktopia Breanna Loose October 3, 2016 Concert Reviews, Festivals, Live Performances, Music, Photo Gallery In case you missed all the happenings in Denton, TX last weekend, Oaktopia took their festival to new heights incorporating one hell of a lineup considered to be their best year yet. Kicking off the inaugural Oaktopia just 3 years ago, the festival has come a long way in a very short amount of time. Living in Denton most of my life, I’ve seen what festivals happened before, and what festivals are taking over. When we all got word that 35 Denton would no longer be happening, the town was shocked. 35 Denton was so important to us. This festival was like our mini version of SXSW. How could the city take that from us? They couldn’t! Two dudes, Matt Battaglia & Corey Claytor came together to create what would be the best annual festival to happen in Denton from then on out. And so far, they appear to be doing a great job any way you look at it. This year, being the best year yet, Oaktopia brought in over a hundred artists for 3 days of music, art, local business vendors, and more. But three artists that really stuck on out on this lineup were Erykah Badu, OT Genasis, and Rae Sremmurd. Erykah Badu, the queen of Dallas, OT Genasis, the man who gave us “Coco” & “Cut It”, and Rae Sremmurd, the wildest duo who turn every performance into a raging mad party, were truly the best headliners to happen on that Saturday evening of the festival. In her Lo Down Loretta Brown DJ form, Erykah warmed the crowd up playing all of the hits you’d want to hear, and of course plenty of sexy flexy jams…because hello, it’s Erykah Badu! When OT Genasis came on stage, this was a complete surprise. Most know OT from his hit singles “Coco” and “Cut It”, but when you see that this man actually has quite the catalog of music, and also gives an exceptional performance, you really start to realize that he certainly is not a one-hit-wonder like a lot of listeners thought he would be. And as for Rae Sremmurd, this was just absolute chaos…in a good way, though. The rap duo recently released their second album to date, Sremm Life 2 and will be kicking off a tour for that project very soon, but Denton got to get that first look of what that tour will be like. Swae Lee still has plenty of pineapple to go around, Slim Jxmmi is walking around in pink Gucci fur, and there’s going to be champagne. LOTS OF CHAMPAGNE. Get ready. Check out scenes from these three performances below.
