Shawty Lo, known for hits with D4L, “Dey Know” and more was 40 years old.

Shawty Lo, the D4L leader who struck bing in 2008 with “Dey Know”, “Foolish” and a memorable feud with T.I. died early Wednesday morning. He was 40 years old. Lo’s white Audi was leaving the Blue Flame in Atlanta when the vehicle went over the guardrail, hit trees and caught fire. According to police, two other passengers in the car were taken to the hospital with injuries.

In the midst of Atlanta’s “snap” era, Shawty Lo was easily one of its biggest stars. In 2006, D4L arrived with “Laffy Taffy”. The infectious single landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually went triple platinum. His Units In Da City album in 2008 gave him solo success outside of D4L. The album featured hits such as “Dey Know”, “Dun Dun”, “Foolish” and more. “Dey Know” rose to No. 31 on the Billboard 100 and was eventually certified gold.

Perhaps most memorably, Shawty Lo waged war with T.I. over authenticity about being from Bankhead. The two traded disses all over 2008 including T.I.’s “What Up, What’s Haapnin'” from Paper Trail.
