Scottish songbird Emeli Sandé sounds her return with an emotionally raw new single, “Hurts.”

Where in the world has Emeli Sandé been??

The Scottish singer released one of the best albums of the decade with her 2012 debut LP, Our Version of Events, a rollercoaster of emotions that was upbeat and two-step-worthy in some places and that made listeners swan dive into their feels in others. And just as quickly as she’d surfaced, Sandé disappeared, even as her songs popped up in places that allowed her sound to persist (“Breaking the Law,” for example, appeared on an episode of the BET series Being Mary Jane).

Sometimes you just need a break from it all, especially when you’re juggling not only the push and the pull of the industry, but that of your own personal life as well. For Emeli Sandé, her break was four years away from the spotlight, save public appearances and performances throughout Europe.

On Friday, the Scot soprano sounded her return – Sandé set her sophomore album later for this fall and also shared her first single in years, “Hurts.”

She may have been gone for awhile, but Emeli Sandé’s voice is still a force to be reckoned with. Emeli sounds powerful and sassier than ever on “Hurts,” her vocals bouncing over the live band instrumentation. There’s even a choir in the background to add to the stirring emotion of the track. There’s a slight Michael Jackson feel to it, too, and in spite of “Hurts’s” emotionally charged material, listeners will find it hard not to clap along to the four-minute number.

“This entire album is about me not holding back and not censoring myself,” Sandé shared in a press release with Idolator about her upcoming LP, slated to be entitled Long Live the Angels. “And ‘Hurts’ is an explosion… it’s just real talk.”
