Bell Biv Devoe is back sampling The Notorious B.I.G. for “Run”

Bell Biv Devoe, the three New Edition members who bought big into New Jack Swing with “Poison” and “When Will I See You Smile Again” are back with their first record in 15 years. It’s titled “Run” and you can see the New York inspired video below.

Produced by Erick Sermon, “Run” flips the all too familiar guitar from Herb Alpert’s “Rise” (famously sampled for The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize”) and carries it along for a retro-future track. Ricky Bell is on vocal duty while Michael Bivins & Ronnie Devoe share time rapping on the third verse. Mixing topical references from Power, Empire with their own brand of confidence, the two make 1990 feel like 2016. Although, I’m still a little thrown off by three ageless entertainers rapping about thots and fake butts.

Now four decades deep in the game, Bell Biv Devoe plan on releasing a brand new album, Three Stripes = next January. A play on the trio along with Boston’s rich history with Adidas, it marks their first album since 2001’s BBD. Currently, all six members of New Edition have a hand in the upcoming New Edition mini-series The New Edition Story. The three-part eic is set to air on BET in 2017.
