Vince Staples encounters a hellaish trip in his Nabil directed ‘Prima Donna’ short film.

Vince Staples released his Prima Donna EP a little less than a week ago. The North Long Beach, California rapper promised a short film to match the EP and today it arrives via Vevo.

Directed by Nabil, the Prima Donna short echoes the same lines and aspects of the EP from celebrity, society, and Staples’ well documented thoughts about the world at large. He checks into an eerie hotel after a cap driver begins rapping “Smile” to him, gets hounded by fans who arrive as a figment of his imagination and more. The film descends further into madness as Staples’ sees visions of the late Tupac Shakur & Amy Winehouse in the hallway.

When he spoke to Zane Lowe about Prima Donna last week, Staples discussed his creative process in regards to the EP. “I worked hard on it…On just trying to have stories to tell people. Honesty is easy. The stories—that’s the hard part,” he said. The resulting project analyzed and picked apart the status of celebrity in this society, which is a clear representation on Staples’ view of things. “You’re not a person when you make music. You’re a link. They just want to click it. It get’s kinda crazy out here.”
