Hear “Hum Along & Dance,” Janelle Monáe’s funktastic cut from The Get Down Original Soundtrack.

In less than 48 hours, the long-awaited series The Get Down will premiere on Netflix. The series has gotten much attention in advance of its premiere due to its awesome trailer and its director, Baz Luhrmann, who has a penchant to emphasize visuals. But the other thing going for The Get Down is its soundtrack: the soundtrack is not only executive produced by Nas but features, amongst others, Miguel and Janelle Monáe.

The Electric Lady herself took to Ebro Darden’s Beats 1 Radio show to premiere her contribution to The Get Down’s soundtrack, entitled “Hum Along & Dance (Gotta Get Down).” Before sharing the song itself, Monáe briefly discussed her admiration of Luhrmann’s artistry, growing up in a disadvantaged area (“music was my only outlet”), and her upcoming movie Hidden Figures with Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Kevin Costner.

Borrowing a sample from the Jackson 5 song of the same name, “Hum Along & Dance” sounds like it might’ve fit perfectly on the Wondaland Records’ singer’s last album and is infectious and funky. Monáe admits that Michael Jackson is one of her biggest inspirations and you can hear it on “Hum Along & Dance,” especially when Janelle starts chanting “We gotta get down!”

Stream Janelle Monae’s “Hum Along & Dance (Gotta Get Down)” track for yourself down below. The track appears on The Get Down’s official soundtrack, which touches down in stores on August 12th, the same day the series itself premieres on Netflix.
