Watch Kehlani play Harley Quinn – sans jester suit – in her new “Gangsta” visuals.

It’s safe to say that Kehlani has taken back her 2016. Though she began the year mired in relationship controversy and a potential self-harm incident, the Bay Area songbird has since channeled her energy into the music, and it’s made her stronger. The past two months alone, for example, have resulted in “Distraction” and “24/7”.

The singer also recently featured on the soundtrack for the DC/Warner Bros. film Suicide Squad, dropping off an EDM&B cut entitled “Gangsta.” Today, Kehlani unveiled an official music video for her latest single.

The lyrics within “Gangsta” all but seemed analogous to The Joker’s relationship with Harley Quinn. Kehlani sings on the track’s opening verse, for example, “I’m f*cked up, I’m black & blue/ I’m built for it – all the abuse”; and Skylar Grey, who co-wrote the song with Kehlani, admitted it’s sort of the Joker and Harley’s “theme song.” “Gangsta’s” visuals further drive that point home, interspersing clips of the two in the film with the singer channeling Harley in her own way. Those who have already seen the movie, might even recognize Harley Quinn’s baseball bat making a cameo.

Watch Kehlani’s visuals for “Gangsta” up top. Suicide Squad is currently out in theaters now, and its accompanying soundtrack (which also bears appearances from Lil’ Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Rick Ross, Action Bronson, and Panic! at the Disco, amongst others) is out now on iTunes.
