Even though Dev Hynes promised a new Blood Orange album in Freetown Sound, few could have predicted it would arrive late Monday night. Yet, that’s exactly what happened. Freetown Sound, the sequel to 2013’s Cupid Deluxe is an album squarely centered around black self-love and Hynes’ promotion of the album has featured a clip of Blondie, Ta-Nehisi Coates & De La Soul.

“I have just finished making an album about my life, my upbringing, being black in England, being black in America…my movement to this country at the age of 21, the same age that my mother moved from Guyana to London, and my father from Sierra Leone to London,” Hynes wrote in a press release along with the announcement. “Freetown Sound, the name of my album, is taken from Freetown where my father was born.”

Hynes also revealed the video for “Augustine” from the album, a electro-pop number where he’s playing piano alone in an apartment, dancing on rooftops and sings in front of the flag of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Freetown Sound features a bevy of guests including Ava Raiin, Empress Of, Debbie Harry, Bea1991, Starchild, Ian Isiah, Nelly Furtado, Coates, Kelsey Lu, Carly Rae Jepsen, Zuri Marley, quotes from Vince Staples, Venus Xtravaganza, Ashlee Haze & De La.
