Kitty Cash - Love The Free 3-cover

The Brooklyn DJ releases the last installment of her Love The Free mixtape trilogy.

All good things must come to an end.

Back in 2013, Brooklyn-based DJ Kitty Cash made a name for herself with the release of her Love The Free mixtape. The mixtape became synonymous with being a sort of “breaking ground” for upcoming and emerging R&B and hip-hop acts, with appearances from Kilo Kish, Vic Mensa, Jean Deaux, Kelela and more.

She followed that up a year later with Love The Free II, building on her penchant to “find” sounds and highlighting SZA, Rochelle Jordan, post-“Whip My Hair” Willow Smith, Doja Cat, Wynter Gordon, Rome Fortune, and Yuna, to name a few. It got to a point where a “co-sign” from Cash, actually meant something – actually woke people up to slept-on acts. The proof is in the pudding – Kelela’s Hallucinogen EP was one of the best projects of 2015. Yuna just released her most mainstream (and arguably) best LP to date. Kilo Kish dropped Reflections in Real Time back in February. SZA’s debut album is expected to land in late 2016.

Love The Free: Vol. III, the third installment in the series, released Friday and is the completion of Kitty Cash’s trilogy. “I was really excited to finish it, I’m also really really sad. It’s literally my baby,” Cash told Milk, who premiered the full mixtape on Friday following its streaming run on NPR. “It’s a bittersweet goodbye.”

If this is how it ends, Love The Free: Vol. III has saved some of the truly best for last. Propelled forward by its lead single, St. Beauty’s “Holographic Lover,” Love The Free: Vol. III is 28 tracks deep and over 95 minutes in length. The tape boasts appearances from Angel Haze (on the “Part II Remix” of LionBabe’s “Jungle Lady”), Ye Ali, Bosco, Lil’ Yachty, Raury, and more; it also has two cameos from standards in Cash’s industry, in the form of DJ Khaled and Solange interludes. But as with every Love The Free project, the true gems are in the lesser known names. Keiya’s “Thru,” as the first song, starts the tape on a smooth R&B note. The Pheels’ “French Toast” is irresistibly infectious. And Leikely47’s “Ready” is a mood-setting slow burner.
