The Roots Picnic is heading to New York in October with a massive lineup

The Roots Picnic took place in Philadelphia over the weekend. Outside of an abrupt Future set thanks to sound issues, it was another one for the books. DMX & Swizz Beatz tore the stage down, Usher acted like a secondary frontman for The Roots and then some. With ambition full in their hearts, organizers are set to head to New York with the fabled Roots Picnic, adding performances from D’Angelo, John Mayer, Niles Rodgers & the entire Wu-Tang Clan.

“October is going to mark the first annual Roots Picnic New York City,” Black Thought told NY1 this morning. “Lineup number one is kind of like our unofficial soul night. Our friends, of course the Roots together with D’Angelo and John Mayer. Night number two is what we like to dub our Love Letter To New York City, and that’ll be the Roots along with David Byrne, formerly of Talking Heads, Nile Rogers of Chic and the entire Wu Tang Clan.”

The second night of the festival, dubbed a “Love Letter To New York” has a rather strong undercard. Styles P, Freddie Gibbs, Royce Da 5’9 & J. Period are all part of Black Thought’s live mixtape, Lil Uzi Vert, Yuna, Daniel “Bambaata” Marley and DJ Jazzy Jeff are all helping out to end what should be a rather great fall weekend in NY.

Tickets start off at $99 and can be purchased on If you’re planning on taking in both days of the festival, tickets are $175 which should offer you the best of both worlds, all things considered. Plus, if Freddie Gibbs is free of his legal issues overseas and the entire Wu-Tang Clan does indeed show, it may make for one of the best New York picnics you’ve ever taken part in. How romantic is that?
