Slim K x Ja Rule x Ashanti - JaShanti-cover

The Chopstars DJ puts the purple touch on the Murder Inc. duo’s greatest hits on a new mixtape.

Arguably, Ja Rule and Ashanti could do no wrong back in the early 2000s. As the flagship artist and “new princess of hip-hop and R&B,” respectively, of Irv Gotti’s Murder, Inc. label, the two put out hit after hit, it seemed, dominating radio and many a music video countdown show.

So it makes perfect sense that Slim K would revisit Ja & Ashanti’s early ’00s run by chopping not slopping some of both artists’ best collaborations and solo joints. Pairing up with 40oz Van, the Houston DJ dropped a new project, JaShanti.

Fifteen tracks deep, JaShanti has Slim K putting the purple touch and a modern spin of sorts on many classic songs from Murder Inc.’s finest. The nostalgic value is what will make many listeners come for JaShanti, but the fresh revisits will make them stay. Slim K kicks things off by turning Ashanti’s debut single “Foolish” into something that sounds lifted from the 70s; he morphs Ja’s thug love anthem “Put It On Me” with Vida and Lil’ Mo into a two-step worthy addition to the cookout playlist. Slim K’s chops cause Ashanti and Ja’s “Mesmerize” to flirt with Ginuwine’s “Pony” instrumental into an old-school sounding groove. “Down 4 U,” already a great slow jam in its own right, burns even more slowly in Slim K’s hands. To say nothing of how for the finale, Slim K transforms Ja Rule and Lil’ Mo’s “I Cry” into styrofoam cup gospel.
