That Time Haley Smalls Covered Drake’s “Controlla” [@HaleySmall @Drake @arigoldmusic] Bradford J. Howard May 20, 2016 MP3s, Music 1 Comment Since it first touched down earlier this Spring as a leak, Drake’s “Controlla” single has been a clear fan favorite. Its irresistible island flavor, coupled with Dancehall Drake adding a slight patois accent to his singing voice, made “Controlla” an instant hit, especially with Popcaan assisting. Though many have bemoaned Drake’s removal of Popcaan from the version of “Controlla” that appears on VIEWS, it’s just too good to be denied. Haley Smalls, as a fellow artist from Toronto, noticed that, too. That’s why the vocalist – whose solid The Cure mixtape touched down back in February – opted to make her own cover of “Controlla.” The Beenie Man-sampling intro remains and producer AriGoldMusic is on hand to recreate Boi-1da’s infectious instrumental for Smalls, whose voice surprisingly glides over the smooth beat with ease. Unlike the daring that Drake infused in the original, Haley’s “Controlla” feels more seductive. Though she’s merely repeating Drake word for word, there’s something sexy about hearing Smalls coo, for example, “Okay, you like it, when I get, agg-ressive, to you.” Take a listen to Haley Smalls’s “Controlla” cover up top.
