Bibi Bourelly - Free The Real Pt. 1

Most of what people know about Bibi Bourelly comes from the liner notes of others. Seriously. The German-born, L.A.-residing Def Jam signee’s pen game is pretty proper, as she’s written a number of Rihanna’s more popular songs. Most recently, for example, Bourelly was the pen behind Robyn Fenty’s pre-ANTI single, “BBHMM (B*tch Better Have My Money).”

Now, following her appearance alongside Usher and Nas on the former’s politically charged “Chains” single, Bibi Bourelly is stepping into her own spotlight. Bourelli released her debut EP, Free the Real (Pt. #1) last week, and has partnered with Spotify to allow a completely free stream of the project.

Five tracks in length, Free The Real (Pt. #1) rides along on mostly scaled-back instrumentation, over which Bourelly’s voice meshes perfectly. But lead single “Ego” and its bare bones emotion aren’t even the best part of Free The Real. Bluesy tones and acoustic guitars dominate the EP. Intro track “Sally” has Bourelly adding a Caribbean inflection to her voice, in homage to her half-Haitian roots. “What If I Told You” rides a country-rock guitar wave, Bourelly’s wailing “Do you even care?” on the track’s hook pulling at the heartstrings. And Bourelly’s father, noted musician Jean-Paul Bourelly, even makes an appearance on “Guitar.” The “#bbsociety” may still be fledging and getting on its legs; but after Free The Real (Pt. #1), chances are Bourelly’s following will grow greater and stronger than it’s ever been.
