It’s easy to assume that music’s Rookie of the Year for the first quarter of 2016 has been Anderson .Paak. From breathtaking live shows at Coachella to a lauded LP in Malibu, our initial Artist to Watch for the year has lived up to all expectations and even exceeded them. For his first set of visuals off of Malibu, .Paak instead ties a trio of records from the first half of the album in “The Seasons / Carry Me / The Water” all into one, story-woven video. Co-directed with Chris Le, the trio of videos for the album’s third, fourth & fifth tracks resembles the collage that makes up Malibu‘s cover. There’s vast attention to detail here (see the mechanized “trash wall” that literally looks like Donald Trump), baptisms, life of migrant workers out West in California and more. It’s .Paak essentially telling a engaging story of life at its lowest just before it gets really high and exciting.
