musiq soulchild - life-earth-cover

At long last, Musiq Soulchild’s Life on Earth LP finally touched down last Friday. The singer’s first album since his 2011 effort MusiqInTheMagiq – and his first project since his EP under his rap alter-ego “The Husel” – Life on Earth put attention back on the neo-soul crooner with its debut single, “I Do.” The single signaled a return to Musiq’s classic sound, high on melody and smooth on beat. For those who may be skeptical, however, that Musiq’s new, well, music, isn’t as good as it used to be, the singer has put his album up for free streaming on Spotify.

Clocking in at 12 tracks deep – with two additional bonus tracks on the album’s digital-only Deluxe Edition – Life on Earth bears appearances from JoiSTARR (twice, including on the smooth album stand out “Part Of Me”), Willie Hyn, and Rapsody. Earth is a love album through and through, describing the ups and downs that come in matters of the heart. It kicks off with the two-step worthy “Wait A Minute” and smoothly rides along. But what’s greatest about Life on Earth, is the nostalgic feel it will likely resurrect in listeners. Tracks like “Heart Away” and “Far Gone” (featuring Rapsody) sound lifted from the early ’00s hey-day of neo-soul; while songs like “The Girl” prove that Musiq hasn’t missed a step in singing songs that appeal to the emotions.
