Terrace Martin Pays Tribute To His Heroes With “Tribe Called West” [@terracemartin] Brandon Caldwell March 25, 2016 MP3s, Music 1 Comment In the wake of Phife Dawg’s death on Wednesday, millions of Tribe Called Quest fans have paid tribute to the late rapper. Mac Miller premiered a “5 Foot Assassin” track that tied together classic ATCQ samples. On the West, Terrace Martin looked back at his heroes with a brand new cut, “Tribe Called West”. The track comes ahead of his Velvet Portraits album, due next week. “I was inspired by the energy of N.Y. alone to do different types of music. That’s why I love the city. But I also wanted to do something to say thank you to one of my favorite groups,” the saxophonist told The FADER. “Thank you for letting me know it’s okay to be different. Thank you for turning me on to jazz music, because without A Tribe Called Quest there would not be a Terrace Martin. I wouldn’t even be a musician because ATCQ is what made me want to play the saxophone.” “Tribe Called West” contains trumpet work from Keyon Harrold as both he & Martin riff over a snare drum with their own brushes.
