Boogie The Beast - Bitter Raps II

West Coast phenom Boogie The Beast has been a quiet man since signing with Interscope Records. This is not to say that Boogie isn’t working. No, the author of one of the best free mixtapes of 2015, The Reach, has simply moved in silence.

The early results of those moves surfaced on Monday, when Boogie let loose two brand new songs. Each shows a different side of the Long Beach emcee and also of his frequent collaborator Keyel, who’s on production for both tracks.

The first, “Out My Way (Bitter Raps II),” is in the crunk vein of “Oh No,” Boogie’s breakout single yet pensive. Keyel joins forces with Amaire Johnson, opting for a strings-driven beat that plays out like a sinister lullaby, thumping through the speakers. Boogie snaps and barks even with his flow adjusting to the rhythm of the instrumentation, snarling at one point on the song, “I’d be f*cking your brains up, if I told you to man up!”

“Catching Feelings,” on the other hand, slows things down. Keyel opts for murky, mood-setting instrumentation for the nearly three minute track. As its title implies, matters of the heart are involved; and though feature Tink doesn’t bless the song with her lyricism, she does summon the sultry vocals that made her “Million” single so popular on “Catching Feelings'” hook and tames The Beast just a tad.

Whether “Catching Feelings” and “Out My Way” will land on Boogie’s as-yet-untitled Interscope debut remains to be seen. For now, you can press play above and rest easy knowing The Beast hasn’t missed a beat.
