Corinne Bailey Rae belongs to that cadre of singers – much like Jazmine Sullivan prior to 2014 – who dropped off not one, but two consecutive stellar bodies of singing work and then seemed to disappear. Artists have their reasons to “leave” or take breaks; but when someone’s voice is as light and gripping as Bailey Rae’s is, it’s hard not to notice their absence. Especially in a modern R&B scene that consistently flirts with pop or even rap.

Earlier this week, “#CBRNEWALBUM” could be found trending on Twitter; and if you followed the hashtag, it lead you to Corinne’s page, where she teased that she was “excited to share new music.” It seems we were given fair warning as early as a month ago, on January 28th.

So here we are, on Friday, February 26, and Corinne Bailey Rae has not only given an official name to her first studio album since 2010’s The Sea, but also unveiled a new single, “Been to The Moon.” The song itself is masterful, bearing composing credits from Paris and Amber Strother of the R&B group KING and showcasing Bailey Rae’s voice, which rides ’70s-esque instrumentation by way of smooth drums and sweeping strings. But “Been to The Moon” is given more personality by way of its music video. Director Chris Tucker depicted the lovely singer exploring this “new world” after her ship crash-lands in the middle of the desert. In a shimmering golden bodysuit and a retro pantsuit, she observes, wanders, and eventually claims this planet as her own.

Watch Corinne Bailey Rae’s return to the music, “Been to the Moon,” up top. Bailey Rae’s The Heart Speaks in Whispers LP is slated to release May 13, 2016.
