Dave Mirra, the BMX legend who once held the record for most X Games medals and was a significant figure in the rise of extreme sports in the ’90s and early ’00s has died. He was 41. According to TMZ, Mirra died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The news was further confirmed by Greenville, North Carolina police who had discovered Mirra’s body in his truck.

Mirra hosted “The Challenge” on MTV from 2004 to 2005. He was also the subject of the “Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX” video game series.

For 13 consecutive X Games beginning with the inaugural event in 1995 to 2008, Mirra medaled, totaling 24 medals for his career. He is survived by his wife Lauren and two children.
