Every year, we are reminded of the void in R&B music that exists without Aaliyah Dana Haughton. The singer, who was tragically killed in a plane accident nearly fifteen years ago, was born on this day back in 1979, and would’ve been 37 had she lived to see it.

While the internet and social media is often flooded with tributes to the “Baby Girl” of R&B on January 16th – #HappyBirthdayAaliyah is currently trending on Twitter – up-and-coming Houston singer Coline Creuzot (who Day & A Dream recently interviewed) took things one step further, by covering Aaliyah’s version of the Isley Brothers’ classic “At Your Best (You Are Love).”

The cover was actually recorded last month during a studio session. But where Aaliyah and the Isleys had smooth instrumentation to add to their melody, Coline is posted up in the studio while her producer Javad simply plays a stripped-down keyboard, allowing for the full range of the singer’s voice to take center stage. Though it’s only the song’s first verse and hook, Coline Creuzot’s version of “At Your Best” is simply stirring. It makes you wonder if the full version might appear on Creuzot’s upcoming Timeless project.

Watch a rising star pay tribute to a fallen star up top.
