Anderson.Paak - MALIBU

There’s a reason why Anderson.Paak was lauded by editor-in-chief Brandon Caldwell since late last year. And there’s a reason why Day & A Dream’s own Kelsey McDaniel picked Paak as the first amongst her “Artists to Watch” series for 2016. The West Coast singer has had the juice – or at least the momentum – since his star turn on Dr. Dre’s Compton last year and hasn’t missed a step yet.

MALIBU, the follow-up to .Paak’s Venice album, was one of the most anticipated releases for 2016; and MALIBU officially lands in stores and online retailers today. But for those still not sold on the magic of Anderson .Paak, the artist is providing a free stream of the album on Spotify.

Sixteen tracks deep and carried by lead single “The Season/Carry Me,” MALIBU sports appearances from ScHoolboy Q (“Am I Wrong”), The Game (“Room in Here”), Talib Kweli, and two choirs. MALIBU won’t be a surprise to those who have followed .Paak’s rapid rise; it will, however, make believers out of those who’ve never heard of him before. From the guitar-driven intro track “The Bird” to the horns that give a funky feel to “Put Me Thru” to the body-rocking “Come Down,” MALIBU is refreshing and doesn’t try imitate. Whether that will satiate the masses of fickle music listeners, however, remains to be seen.
