Will Smith Felt Terrible When He Learned ‘Independence Day’ Character’s Fate [@independenceday] Will Pharaoh January 4, 2016 TV/Movies When the Independence Day: Resurgence trailer dropped it broke the internet as well as my favorite glass mug. After 20 years and somewhat patiently waiting for another one (DJ Khaled voice) the war between a hostile alien race and the forces fighting against them have returned. But I was so shocked and disappointed to find out that Will Smith would not be reprising his role as Captain Steve Hiller. It was first reported that Will Smith would not reprise his role due to scheduling conflicts with his film Concussion, but we later found out that Smith’s character was actually killed off years before the events of Resurgence. In a recent interview Smith was asked about his thoughts on the matter, he said bluntly to Yahoo Movies, “It was terrible when I found out my character died.” It was a shame to find out that we won’t get to see Will returning to kick some alien butt. While Will Smith won’t be appearing in Resurgence, his legacy continues. Vivica A. Fox will be returning as Hiller’s widower Jasmine. Additionally, his now adult son Dylan, played by newcomer Jessie Usher, will have a substantial role in the film, apparently following in his late father’s footsteps. It’s a bummer that we won’t get to see Usher’s character team up with his father to take down some alien scum. Perhaps they will bless us with a dream sequence that will pair the two together somehow for the extended cut or Blu-Ray extra. Independence Day: Resurgence will be released June 24th.
