This wasn’t supposed to be the story for Rowdy Rebel. His debut mixtape, Shmoney Keeps Calling isn’t supposed to be toe-tagged with the idea that it may be his last for a while, but here we are.

In 2014, Rowdy Rebel and Bobby Shmurda had found themselves miles away from their Flatbush, Brooklyn apartments and in the company of stars. Thanks to viral-friendly and popular street records like “Hot N*gga” and “Computers”, the two of them along with their GS9 compatriots had not only signed a major label deal with Epic Records, they had become the latest in a string of New York City street acts to make a dent on the national conscious.

All of that press immediately inverted upon itself on December 17, 2014 as Rowdy along with Shmurda and a host of others who proclaimed GS9 were arrested on a multitude of charges ranging from attempted murder to drugs & gun possession. The two key members of GS9, Rowdy & Bobby were separated from each other and at the time of this writing are still sitting in separate jails in New York City. Shmurda has publicly expressed his frustration in regards to getting his million dollar bail granted and Rowdy’s still hoping to be released from Riker’s Island in 2016.

Despite spending a year behind bars awaiting trial, Rowdy Rebel releases his Shmoney Keeps Calling mixtape with little or no means of further promoting it outside of word of mouth. There are plenty of high profile guests appearing on Shmoney Keeps Calling from the likes of A$AP Ferg, TeeFLii, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Durk & French Montana and there’s a Shmoney reunion when Bobby joins Rowdy on three of the tape’s tracks, “All About Her Shmoney”, “24 Hours To Live” & “Right Now”. You can see the promise tucked in a 20-something cat who’s view of the world is nothing more than a lick to hit. Stream & download Rowdy Rebel’s Shmoney Keeps Calling mixtape below.
