Fast & Furious director Justin Lin brought life back to a franchise that people thought was dead after Toyko Drift. Now he’s bringing even more action to a franchise that’s gotten plenty of joy out of fans for generations. Paramount Pictures has released the debut trailer for Star Trek Beyond, Lin’s first entry into the legendary franchise after Star Trek & Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams opted to step down to a producer role so he could focus on the upcoming Star Wars film, The Force Awakens and more. The script was penned by Doug Jung and noted Trekkie (and great filmmaker in his own right) Simon Pegg who plays Scotty in the films. The general basis of their script? Captain James T. Kirk and his Enterprise crew are all stranded on an unknown planet, with no way of getting back to one another.

If you’ve caught any Justin Lin film before, the trailer for Star Trek Beyond should remind you of what he’s known for, splashy explosions, quick wit and plenty of action. Soundtracked to the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” there’s a far lighter nature to Lin’s film as compared to the drama stretched out by what Abrams created with his first two Star Trek entries. Pegg will be joined by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho in the film, along with series newcomers Idris Elba & Sofia Boutella.

Expect the Star Trek Beyond trailer to run along with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men: Apocalypse, Captain America: Civil War and Independence Day 2 during the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Why? Think about it, how are you not going to be a big name film franchise and try to remind people you exist when the mother of all film franchises (non-Marvel) is back in theaters?

Catch the new Star Trek Beyond trailer below. The film opens in a wide theatrical release on July 22, 2016.
