Last night, NBC premiered its much-awaited “live” re-make of the The Wiz, the Black version of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz. Given that NBC’s last two “live” musicals – Peter Pan Live! and The Sound of Music Live! – didn’t exactly wow their audiences, early expectations for The Wiz Live! were tempered. But as its cast became more and more loaded, with Queen Latifah, Common, Motown legend Stephanie Mills, Ne-Yo, Uzo Aduba (of Orange is The New Black fame), and newcomer Shanice Williams all being named as additions, The Wiz Live! started getting more and more positive attention.

The end result, was more than stellar. The Wiz Live! mostly stayed true to its original Broadway production, though it did incorporate certain elements of the beloved 1978 Motown film adaptation. It was not only well-received, but praised for its production, vivid costumes and use of color, and especially its performances. Director Kenny Leon did a masterful job bringing things together. Williams, as the newcomer, was under the most pressure, but she was incredible as Dorothy. And, yes, Black Twitter did, as a certain news website suggested, did very much brand The Wiz Live! as “da bomb.”

But if you missed the premiere of The Wiz Live!, if you missed the Ne-Yo’s Tin Man hitting the “dab,” or Elijah Kelly’s Scarecrow working the Stanky Leg into his “You Can’t Win” routine, or the incredible live rendition of “Brand New Day”… then you’re in luck. NBC has put their musical special online for streaming for the next few weeks.

Again, it’s incredible, but don’t take my word for it. Watch NBC’s The Wiz Live! for yourself up top.
