J. Cole - Forest Hills Drive doc

Nearly a year has passed since J. Cole dropped his “surprise” third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, and the project is still getting burn and praise from all circles involved. The LP has birthed at least two radio singles, first with “Wet Dreamz” and now “No Role Modelz” making its rounds.

Though 2014 was good to Cole and 2015 was even better, 2016 might well be the Fayetteville, North Carolina emcee’s biggest year to date. A recent freestyle from Jermaine Cole hinted that he has something on the agenda for 2016; and today, HBO broke the news that it would premiere a documentary based upon J. Cole’s recent “Forest Hills Drive Tour.”

Branded “part concert film, part backstage pass” in a press release from the network, J. Cole Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming will merge Cole’s own words and music with interviews and observations from friends and family, while also showing footage from his “homecoming” concert stop at Fayetteville’s Crown Coliseum this past August. Jay-Z and Drake’s appearances during the Fayetteville show will appear in the documentary, as well.

Directed by Scott Lazer, and executive produced by Cole himself, Ibrahim Ahmad, and Adam Roy, J. Cole Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming will air exclusively on HBO, Saturday, January 9th, at 10 PM Eastern time. Mark your calendars accordingly and expect HBO to drop a trailer or something close to it for the documentary soon.

UPDATE: Turns out we didn’t have to wait that long, after all. You can now watch the official trailer for J. Cole Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming – complete with “Tale of 2 Citiez” playing in the background – down below, courtesy of HBO.
